Understanding Stripe Tax integration with Circle paywalls

Last updated: August, 2026

Integrating Stripe Tax with Circle paywalls opens up a world of convenience for managing taxes for your community paywalls on a global scale. This article explains how this integration works with your Circle community.

Get to know Stripe Tax

Stripe Tax is a powerful feature that makes it easier for you to collect taxes on the paywall purchases for your community. Stripe Tax is optimized for tax calculation in 40+ countries and all US states. Check here for more details.

Here are some key benefits of our integration with Stripe Tax:

  • Automatically calculate and collect taxes for locations for which you have added tax registrations.

  • Seamlessly integrate billing and tax-related information into the paywall checkout pages.

  • Easily manage tax pricing methods for tax collection within your community.

  • Empower members to conveniently manage their billing addresses right from their community accounts.

  • Manage billing address information for your paywall subscribers.

Tax collection

With Stripe Tax, you can configure the pricing method for tax collection using the tax settings in your community.

We offer two tax pricing methods for collecting taxes:

  • Include taxes in the price total: This is an ideal option if you want to factor in taxes in the paywall price.

  • Don’t include taxes in the price total: Opt for this option if you would like to charge taxes on top of the paywall price.

Once you've completed the Stripe Tax integration setup, the paywall checkout pages will require the user's address to subscribe to a paywall.

If you have registered for tax in the location that covers a member's address, Stripe will automatically calculate the relevant taxes based on their Tax ID and address. Members will be able to see the total amount and tax calculation before confirming their subscription to the paywall on the checkout page.

Tax ID validation

Members can optionally add a Tax ID on the checkout page using the Add Tax ID option after entering their address information. This tax ID will be added to customer information in Stripe and appear on their invoices going forward.

When members insert the tax ID, the paywall checkout page performs some validations to ensure correct formatting, including length and country code, according to the relevant tax jurisdiction. This helps prevent incorrect entries and ensures compliance with local tax laws, particularly the reverse-charge rules for VAT IDs in EU-based communities.

After a member has made the purchase, Stripe performs a full audit on the provided tax ID to ensure it is valid for the customer details provided. You can view these audit details by navigating to the customer’s account details in the Customers dashboard on Stripe. In the Details section, check the Tax location status and Tax status and IDs.

Filing taxes

While Stripe Tax can help you collect and report on taxes, you’re responsible for filing and remitting these taxes using a Stripe Tax partner such as TaxJar’s AutoFile solution (US) or Taxually (EU and APAC).

Transaction fees

Transactions processed with Stripe Tax incur an additional fee from Stripe under their Low-code and no-code integration categories. Check here for more details.

Determine where you should collect taxes

As a business selling any services or products, it’s essential to identify the locations where you have tax obligations, such as specific states, provinces, or countries from where your members are purchasing paywalls.

If you’re selling services or products in multiple countries, you may be subject to tax obligations there, even if you sell it online. These requirements vary by country or specific location. You can check out Stripe’s guide for information on registration rules here: Tax registration rules by location.

While the Stripe Tax integration with Circle can help you collect taxes, we are not able to provide advice on your tax obligations. We understand that figuring this out can sometimes be overwhelming. That is why we strongly recommend working with a tax expert who can help you determine your tax obligations and where or when to collect taxes from your members. They have the knowledge and expertise to guide you in the right direction based on your business country and your members' locations.

After you have shortlisted the member locations where you are required to collect taxes, add relevant tax registrations for those locations in your Stripe Tax settings. You can add them while setting it up or later in your Stripe account connected with Circle paywalls.

It is important to note that in order to calculate and collect taxes from a member during the checkout process, you need to add a tax registration for their location (specific states, provinces, or countries, as suggested by a tax expert). Stripe won't automatically collect taxes from a member location if you haven't added the registration for that specific country, state, or province.

Guide your existing members to add billing addresses

If you already have active paywall subscriptions from existing members, you need to ask them to confirm the billing address in their community account. Once the member has added the billing address, Stripe will automatically start collecting taxes on their future invoices if your tax registration covers their location.

📚 Here's our help guide that you can share with your members to guide them on how to add the billing address to their community account: Add or update your billing address for your membership subscription.

You can also update a member's billing address on their behalf by following this guide here. Here are some of the ways you can share the instructions:

  • Post or email: You can create a post in one of your spaces to share instructions with members who have active subscriptions to confirm their billing addresses. Similarly, you can bulk email your members with active subscriptions using your preferred email tools.

  • Direct messages: You can also send individual DMs or start a group DM with members who have active subscriptions to help them add billing addresses to their accounts.

  • Workflows: You can set up a workflow in your community to bulk send direct messages with instructions on how to confirm their billing addresses. To achieve this:

  1. Create a bulk action workflow.

  2. In the Entry rule section, add Paywall subscription audience rule, and then select the paywall.

  3. In the Action section, choose Send a direct message action and enter your message.

  4. Run the workflow.
