Get to know community notifications

Last updated: October, 2026

Whether you access a community through web browsers, the Circle desktop app, or mobile apps, you can stay connected and engaged through notifications! Let's take a look at how community notifications work.

Overview

You can customize your notification preferences to receive updates about the community activity that's most relevant to you.

Community notifications are divided into the following categories:

  • Email preferences: This category covers your preferences for receiving marketing emails about offers, news, and updates from your community.

  • New activity: This category includes notifications for mentions, direct messages, Circle live, weekly digests, and activities on your posts and comments.

  • New posts: This category covers notifications for new content posted in post, image, and event spaces that you’re a part of.

  • Default notifications: This category includes notifications that are automatically sent based on community settings or specific actions. For more information, see the Default notifications section in this article.

Depending on your settings, you may receive notifications for these categories in a few different ways:

  • Email: Sent to the email address linked to your account.

  • In-app notifications: Notifications that you receive in your notification panel on a browser, desktop app, or mobile apps.

  • Mobile notifications (push notifications): If you’re using a mobile app and have notifications enabled on your device.

Automatically enabled notifications

When you join a community, certain notifications are automatically enabled to help you stay up to date.

  • Email preferences: By default, offers, news, and updates via email are enabled.

  • New activity: Some communities may enable all notification types for every option under the New activity category for new members. You can update your preferences once you sign in to your account.

  • New posts: Notification settings for new posts vary by community configuration. Certain or all notification types may be enabled for specific spaces.

ℹ️ Note: While these notifications are enabled by default, you can turn them off at any time, once you sign in to the community.

Default notifications

Besides the range of notifications you can customize, communities may also send some default notifications based on the admin's configuration or when specific actions are triggered within the community. It is not possible to customize notifications that fall into this category.
