Transfer ownership of your community to another admin
Last updated: November, 2026
Transfer primary ownership of your Circle community to another person on your team. For example, when you’re leaving the company, handing the community off to a colleague, or transferring it as part of a business sale.
Only the current primary owner of the community can initiate an ownership transfer. The transfer is performed by the Circle support team after the request is verified.
Before you begin
Before contacting support, please ensure:
The new owner already has an admin account in your community: Ownership can only be transferred to someone who is already an admin. If they aren’t an admin yet, add them as an admin first.
You have access to the current owner’s email address: The request must come from the email address currently listed as the primary owner. This is how Circle support verifies your identity. If you no longer have access to that email, see the Troubleshooting section below.
Transfering ownership
Step 1: Confirm the new owner is set up as an admin
We can only transfer the ownership to someone who is already an admin in the community.
To reconfirm, you can:
Click Audience in the left sidebar, then select Audience.
Navigate to the Admin tab and confirm that the person you want to transfer ownership to is listed as an admin.
If they aren’t, you can give them admin privileges from their member account.
Step 2: Email Circle support from the current owner's email
We use the sender's email to confirm you are the current owner. From the same email address that is currently the primary owner, send a message to Circle support with the following details:
Your community URL (for example, https://yourcommunity.circle.so)
A clear statement that you want to transfer primary ownership
The full name and email address of the new owner
Step 3: Wait for confirmation
A support agent will reply to confirm the request and perform the transfer. This is typically a quick process once your identity is confirmed.
Step 4: After the transfer
After the transfer is complete:
The new owner becomes the primary owner of the community.
The previous owner remains in the community as an admin (unless you ask support to remove them).
Billing details and the Stripe customer email do not automatically update.
Troubleshooting
You no longer have access to the current owner's email.
Contact Circle Support and explain the situation. Support will work with you on an alternative verification process, which may require formal documentation (such as business registration documents or proof of acquisition) before the transfer can be approved.
The new owner isn't showing up as an admin.
Make sure they've accepted their admin invite and logged in at least once. If they still don't appear in your admins list, ask them to check their email (including spam) for the invitation, or resend the invitation.
There's a dispute about who the rightful owner is.
Circle defaults to the original owner on file. To transfer ownership in a disputed case, Circle requires either written confirmation from the original owner or formal legal documentation establishing the new owner's right to the account. Contact support and be prepared to share supporting documentation.
