Refunds, for any valid reasons, are part of the user experience that helps you maintain trust and transparency with your community members. In this article, we'll guide you through the steps to provide refunds for member’s paywall transactions.

## Key things to know about refunds

Let’s take a look at some details about refunding member payments:

- Refunds can only be issued by community admins. When a member decides to cancel their subscription from their community account, it will be set to expire at the end of their current billing cycle without a refund.

- Admins have the flexibility to issue either a full or partial refund to a member's original payment at any time from within the community. If you've already provided a partial refund for a specific transaction, you can issue an additional refund for the remaining amount of that same transaction.

- Admins also have the ability to provide a refund when they decide to cancel a member’s subscription, effective immediately. Admins can choose between providing a prorated or full refund of the member's last subscription payment. To learn more about issuing refunds during cancelation, see [**Cancel member subscriptions.**](/p/payments/paywall-management/cancel-member-subscriptions)

- If you provide a full refund to a member’s one-time fee paywall purchase, they will lose access to the content unlocked via the one-time fee paywall.

- It's essential to keep in mind that the refund amount cannot exceed the original transaction amount.

- When you refund a member payment through your Circle community, you’ll automatically get **Circle’s transaction fees** refunded in your payout. Please note that this only applies to Circle’s transaction fees. If you issue a refund directly through your Stripe dashboard, Circle's transaction fees won't get refunded.

- In the event that you try to issue a refund to a member’s payment that is subject to a chargeback, we will direct you to Stripe to follow their chargeback procedure. For more information on handling disputes, please refer to [Stripe documentation](https://support.stripe.com/topics/disputes).

> 🔔 **Notifications** : You can choose to send your member email notifications when you issue refunds by enabling this email option in your [Stripe account](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/emails). In your paywall-connected Stripe account, go to **Settings** → **Customer emails**. Then, in the **Payments** section, enable the **Refunds** toggle.

## Issue a refund

You can provide a refund to a member's paywall transaction anytime from the transactions page in the paywall settings.

To initiate a refund:

1. Click **Payments** in the left sidebar, then select **Transactions**

2. Locate the transaction using filters such as member name and paywall. Once you have located the member, hover over their details.Locate the transaction using filters such as member name and paywall. Once you have located the member, hover over their details.

1. The refund amount will default to the original transaction amount. You can adjust the refund amount to the desired amount if you would like to provide a partial refund instead.

2. Add refund reason (this is for internal purposes; members won’t be able to see the reason).

3. Click **Confirm refund**.

Once you have confirmed the refund, Stripe will directly refund the amount to the member's original payment method. Please note that it may take 5 to 10 days for the refund to appear in the member's bank statement.

When a partial refund is issued, the transaction status will be updated to **Partial refunded**. If a full refund is provided, the transaction status changes to **Refunded**.
