# Apply coupons to existing member subscriptions and installments

As an admin, you have the ability to apply coupons to a member's existing subscription or installment purchase. This article will guide you through important information and steps to apply or remove coupons.

## About coupons

Coupons are a great way to provide discounts on member’s paywall purchases. Here’s how the ability to apply coupons to existing purchases can help:

- Apply coupons to specific member purchases to offer personalized promotional discounts. For example, provide 20% off the next subscription charge to members who attend an event or participate in an activity.

- Provide coupons on existing subscriptions to correct billing errors or adjust subscription pricing.

- When a member is not satisfied with membership or experiencing issues, apply the coupon as a goodwill gesture. You can also apply the coupon as a workaround for members who are looking to pause their membership for a short period of time. 

> 💡 **Tip** : If a coupon has already been applied to the member subscription or installment purchase, you can [remove](https://help.circle.so/p/payments/paywall-management/remove-coupons-from-existing-member-subscriptions-or-installments) it to stop providing discounts or replace it with another coupon.

Key things to know about applying coupons:

- **Coupon eligibility** : 

- **Coupon currency** : 

- **Coupon duration** : When you add a coupon to an existing purchase, it applies to future recurring charges for the duration of the coupon.

- **Coupon application** : Coupons can only be applied to paid charges of the active subscription or installments. 

## Apply a coupon to an existing subscription or installment

1. Click **Payments** in the left sidebar, then select **Subscriptions**.

2. Click the **More actions (three dots)** beside the member’s subscription or installment entry and select  **Apply coupon**.

3. Select the coupon code from the dropdown list and click  **Confirm**.

4. You’ll be presented with coupon discount information, including the coupon duration and total due at the next charge. Review the details and click  **Confirm**.
