# Spaces overview

## **Spaces**

Spaces are the core building blocks of your community. Here are some of the things you can do with spaces:

- Use spaces to start discussions, host events, courses, and make announcements

- Organize your spaces into space groups in the left sidebar

- Set your spaces’ visibility to **Open** , **Private** , or **Secret**

- Set notification preferences for individual spaces

There are six types of spaces you can create in the community:

- Posts

- Events

- Images

- Chat

- Courses

- Members

## **Space groups**

You can organize your spaces by grouping them into space groups. To create a space group:

1. Click the community name or logo (or the dropdown icon next to it) in the top-left corner and select  **Back to community.**

2. From the left sidebar, click on  **Create space group.**

3. Give the space group a name and custom URL.

4. Choose which advanced settings to toggle on/off.

5. Click  **Create.**

Done! Your new space group will appear below any existing space groups.
