You can update the subdomain of your Circle community URL, provided the new subdomain is available in our system. This article will guide you through updating the community URL and how it affects your community configurations.

> 💡 **Tip:** This article focuses on updating the subdomain for your default community URL. If you are looking to update a custom domain for your community, see [**Updating custom domain to a different one**](https://help.circle.so/p/administration/custom-domains/updating-custom-domain-to-a-different-one) **.**

## **Key things to consider before updating the community URL**

It’s important to understand the potential impact on your community content, setup, and existing URLs when updating the community URL.

To provide a clearer example of this in the article, let’s assume the following:

```
Your current community URL is marsed.circle.so
The new subdomain of the community URL you want to set up is marseducation.circle.so
```

### **Community content and URLs**

Changing the subdomain of your community URL won’t affect the content itself. After the update, when you browse your settings, spaces, and posts, all those URLs will match the new community subdomain.

For example, let’s say you have a post with the current community URL ([**marsed.circle.so/c/start-here/howdy**](https://marsed.circle.so/c/start-here/howdy)).

When you change the community's subdomain from [**marsed.circle.so**](http://marsed.circle.so) to [**marseducation.circle.so**](http://marseducation.circle.so), the URL of your post will change to [**marseducation.circle.so/c/start-here/howdy**](https://marseducation.circle.so/c/start-here/howdy). Hence, whenever you want to navigate directly to the post, you must use your community's new subdomain before the post slug.

### **Old community links**

Any community URLs with the old subdomain that you may have shared in community posts, comments, or on your website or social media will no longer work.

> ❗ **Important:** It is not possible to forward all previous URLs with the old subdomain that may have been linked externally. Once you update the community subdomain, the old subdomain will be freed up and can be used by any other community for its URL.

When you update the subdomain of the community URL:

- Your community will only be accessible by using the new community URL ([**marseducation.circle.so**](http://marseducation.circle.so)).

- Any community link that begins with the old subdomain ([**marsed.circle.so**](http://marsed.circle.so)) that you may have shared on your website, in posts, or in comments will no longer function.

- Any community link that begins with the old subdomain ([**marsed.circle.so**](http://marsed.circle.so)) will not automatically redirect to [**marseducation.circle.so**](http://marseducation.circle.so).

### **Community invites**

If you sent member invitations from your community, please note that the **Accept invitation** link will no longer work for those who haven't yet accepted the invitations.

After updating your community URL, we recommend resending the member invitation email to everyone who is still in the invited status:

1. Click the community name or logo in the sidebar and select **Members** from the menu.

2. Click the **Action** dropdown in the top-right corner and select **Resend invitations.**

📚 For more information about pending member invites, see [**Viewing and resending pending member invites**](https://help.circle.so/p/audience/onboarding/viewing-and-resending-pending-member-invites).

### **Invitation links**

When you update your community URL, the existing invitation links in your community will be updated with new links. As a result, the invitation links you shared previously will no longer work for new members.

> ℹ️ **Note:** This won’t affect the members who have already used the link. They'll need to use the updated URL to access their account.

We recommend sharing an updated invitation link with anyone who hasn't joined your community. To copy the updated link:

1. Navigate to the **Invitation Links** page.

2. Click **Copy link** beside the invitation link to copy the URL.

### **Custom domain**

If you have set up a custom domain in your community, you won’t be able to update your community URL until you remove your custom domain.

## **Let your members know**

We suggest communicating this change to your members in advance via your preferred communication method. In your communication, make sure to include the following:

- The reason behind this change and how it will impact your members going forward.

- The date/time when this change will take place.

- New community URL so members can access the community after the change.

## **Update the community URL**

❗ **If you are using single sign-on (SSO):**

1. Turn on the **Allow members with a Circle account to sign in** toggle option first in your SSO settings to prevent getting locked out.

2. Once you have updated the community URL, please go to **Settings** → **SSO,** copy the new callback URL (updating your community URL will also update your callback URL). Next, paste it into your SSO provider to ensure it is updated.

3. If you had enabled the **Allow members with a Circle account to sign in** toggle option in SSO settings, you could disable it now if you no longer need it.

To update the URL:

1. Click the community name or logo (or the dropdown icon next to it) in the top-left corner and select **Settings.**

2. Select **General** under the website section of the settings page.

3. Add a new subdomain in the **Community URL** field.

4. Click **Save changes**.

> ℹ️ **Note:** If the subdomain you wish to use is taken by another community, you will receive the “Slug has already been taken” error. In this case, please try adding a different subdomain.
