Member tag is a powerful feature for your community, enabling effective member segmentation and boosting visibility and engagement. In this article, we will walk you through the member tag feature and its setup process in your community.

## **Get to know member tags**

Member recognition plays a vital role in building a sense of belonging and fostering positive relations within your community. One effective way to achieve this is by implementing member tags, which serve as visual representations of members’ status, group, and accomplishments within the community.

Let’s take a look at some key details and benefits of member tags.

### **Essential details about member tags:**

- Only admins have the authority to create and assign tags to community members.

- You can choose whether a member tag is visible to everyone or restricted to admins.

- When multiple member tags are assigned to a member, tags will automatically appear in order of their creation, with the oldest appearing first.

- In cases where a member has multiple tags assigned, we display a limited number of tags based on the available space, with the remaining tags accessible under the **more** option.

- Member tags serve as filters in both the member directory and the manage audience page, enabling you to easily categorize community members based on their tags.

- If the member directory is accessible to community members and the member tag is set to be visible within the directory, community members can also utilize it as a filter to find others based on their tags.

### **Benefits of member tags**

Member tags offer several advantages, including:

- Categorize your community members into specific groups based on their journey in the community, roles, activities, or milestones.

- Personalize member experiences by showing tags on posts, comments, and member profiles. This way, members can quickly identify and connect with others who share similar interests or belong to the same groups.

- Easily recognize and acknowledge active contributors, top participants, and engaged community members.

- Create a sense of belonging and purpose among members. They can serve as badges of honor and motivation for users to actively participate and contribute to the community.

- Streamline administrative tasks with automation workflows based on tag-related events. You can also perform bulk actions for members with specific tags. You can also use third-party automation tools such as Zapier to automate tasks based on tag-related events and actions.

- Utilize member tags to invite members with certain tags as participants for live sessions or as attendees for events.

## **Create member tags**

To get started, let’s navigate to the member tags page in your community.

1. Click the community name or logo in the top-left corner and select **Audience**.

2. Then, in the sidebar menu, click **Member tags**.

3. In the top-right corner, click the **New member** tag.

Let’s set up all the details for the new member tag.

### **Step 1: Add a member tag name**

Assign a name to your member tag. This name will be visible on the tag if you choose the **Label** format for this member tag.

💡 You can name the tag based on roles, activities, or milestones. For example, creater, pro, top contributor, or founding member.

### **Step 2: Add a tag icon (optional)**

You have the flexibility to include an icon on your member tag, which will be displayed prominently.

To incorporate an icon into your member tag, follow these steps:

1. Click the **Emoji** icon.

2. Choose your preferred icon from our library of default emojis and shapes.

3. Alternatively, you can upload a custom icon from your desktop by navigating to the **Custom** tab:

> 📷 Recommended image dimension for space icon: **280 x 280 px.**

### **Step 3: Apply color background (optional)**

You have the option to apply a custom color background to your member tag display.

To add the background color:

1. Turn on the **Apply color background** toggle.

2. Click the color icon to open the color picker, where you can quickly choose the color from the gradient.

3. You can also directly paste the **HEX** code to the color field to apply a custom color.

### **Step 4: Configure member tag visibility**

When it comes to the visibility of tags, you have two options:

- **Public visibility:** Toggle on **Show this tag on member profiles** to display the tag publicly on member profiles. All members will be able to see this member tag in your chosen locations.

- **Admin-only** **visibility:** Toggle off **Show this tag on member profiles** to limit tag visibility to community admins.

If you've enabled the **Show this tag on member profiles** toggle, you can further select specific locations where this tag appears, including:

- Post & comments bios

- Profile page

- Member directory (for list view only)

### **Step 5: Choose display format**

For the appearance of the member tag, you can select one of two options:

- **Icon with tooltip** : The tag will only display the **icon** , revealing the **name** when hovered over.

- **Label** : Display the tag as a label showcasing the name and icon over your chosen background color. Note that if you opt for the label format, only the initial 20 characters will appear, with the remaining characters truncated. However, users can view the complete member tag name by hovering over the tag.

> 💡 **Tip:** Admins accounts are automatically assigned an **Admin** tag, which appears first before any member tags and cannot be removed.

### **Step 6: Tag members (optional)**

Though not mandatory, you can conveniently assign this tag to members directly within the tag manager while creating or editing the member tag.

To apply this tag to members, simply click the field, type the member’s name, and select the member from the list.
