Fix broken CSS caused by custom code snippets

Last updated: November 26, 2023

Customizing your community with custom code snippets can sometimes lead to unexpected issues due to any errors in your code or updates in our HTML or CSS. When faced with broken CSS due to custom code snippets, community admins have a straightforward solution at their disposal.

If your community experiences non-functional elements due to broken CSS, you can swiftly resolve this by temporarily deactivating custom code snippets on your community page. In your web browser, simply add the following parameter to your community's URL: ?disable_custom_code_snippet=true

Example: https://community.circle.so/home/?disable_custom_code_snippet=true

Additionally, you can directly access your code snippet settings when facing CSS issues caused by custom code by taking the following steps:

  1. In the web browser, access the code snippets settings page by adding the provided parameter to your community's URL: https://[YOUR COMMUNITY URL]/settings/code_snippets/?disable_custom_code_snippet=true

  2. Once on the code snippets page:

    • Copy your custom code: If you haven't stored the code elsewhere for debugging purposes, copy it from the snippet field before proceeding.

    • Remove faulty code: Remove the problematic custom code from the snippet fields.

  3. After removing the code snippet, click Save changes.

Once removed, review the copied code separately on your device to identify and rectify any issues. Once the code is fixed, reapply it to the appropriate snippet field.

As a reminder, you can access the Code snippets settings page by following these steps:

  1. On the top navigation bar, click your community name or logo—or the dropdown icon next to it–and select Site.

  2. From the sidebar menu, go to Code snippets.
